Catching up with FOEC's First Scholarship Winner - Annie Roberto

We caught up with Annie Roberto, who was the first recipient of our annual scholarship prize in 2014.

FOEC: How did you spend the money you received from Friends of Euclid Creek (FOEC)?

ANNIE: The award money was spent on my fall 2014 semester at Tri-C on two classes, Biology and Probability & Statistics, as well as books. It was very much appreciated!

FOEC: What have you been doing since then?

ANNIE: I graduated from Tri-C in spring of 2015, Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0!

I now attend Cleveland State University working on a Bachelor of Environmental Science Degree, and pursing a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) certification while working part-time as a nanny.

FOEC: What outside activities are you involved in?

ANNIE: I continue to volunteer for FOEC as a water monitor and lead an adopt a beach cleanup program for the Alliance for the Great Lakes, at Sims Park in Euclid. I am involved in the student environmental movement at CSU, and would like to publicize the upcoming spring/summer clean ups through FOEC.

Additionally, I recently attended the Rotary Club Lake Erie water crisis conference on the harmful algal blooms (HAB’s). I am interested in pursuing research involving HAB’s and preserving the health of Lake Erie. The latest Plain Dealer article on CWRU and NASA's new water purification system is amazing as it is able to eliminate the microcystic toxins!

FOEC: Wow, Annie has been busy! Glad to hear Annie is interested in researching HAB’s, as it reached Cleveland this past summer. We can hear more about this topic in our upcoming March program with Sarah Orlando, Ohio Sea Grant Extension Educator, Clean Marina and Limnology Outreach Coordinator of the ODNR Office of Coastal Management.
