Wetlands Mapping

The Cuyahoga SWCD Strategic Plan (October, 2003) prioritizes identification of all significant natural areas in Cuyahoga County by December 2007 by creating, in part, an inventory of remaining wetlands and potential mitigation sites.  In an effort to fulfill this goal, Cuyahoga SWCD received funding from the Great Lakes Commission to undertake a wetland inventory in Cuyahoga County.

Goal

To produce a detailed field verified GIS-based map and inventory list of wetland sites in Cuyahoga County outside the boundary of the Cuyahoga River Watershed. Combine the new GIS layer with existing GIS layer created by the Cuyahoga River RAP and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park into one seamless GIS layer.

Objective 1: Utilize existing GIS-based databases, maps and aerial photographs to map and identify potential wetland sites of the smallest practicable size (0.22 acres and greater in size, smaller is desirable).

Objective 2: Conduct field verification of identified wetland sites with priority given to headwater areas as well as their location within public or otherwise easily accessible lands.

Objective 3: Obtain field data from inventoried sites including (but not limited to) wetland size, property ownership, GPS coordinates, wetland quality, restoration/enhancement potential, accessibility, and presence or absence of invasive species.

Objective 4: Provide analysis of collected data and provide recommendations for prioritization of mitigation and enhancement/restoration opportunities.

Objective 5: Consult and involve associated environmental and government stakeholders, as identified by the Cuyahoga SWCD Technical Advisory Group.

Objective 6: Combine the new GIS layer with existing GIS layer created by the Cuyahoga River RAP and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park into one seamless GIS layer.
