Stormwater Control Measure Maintenance Tips

Ohio EPA requires urban communities with separated storm sewer systems (MS4s) to develop, implement, and enforce programs to address flood control and water quality impacts from development projects. Commonly, stormwater runoff is addressed with installation of structural stormwater control measures (basins, green infrastructure, underground pipes etc.) which slow down water and filter pollutants.

Installed stormwater control measures (SCMs) need to be maintained to function properly in perpetuity. Cuyahoga SWCD has an annual inspection program for SCMs that we perform in 19 Cuyahoga County communities to help them meet EPA requirements. We reach out once a year to SCM owners to let them know about needed maintenance to keep their SCM functioning and their community in compliance with their permit.

At Cuyahoga SWCD we are always looking for new ways to educate, and communication once a year is not always enough. With that in mind, we have started a maintenance tips email. Stormwater Control Measure Maintenance Tips is an outreach campaign to deliver useful information and seasonal tips for property owners, managers, contractors, and HOAs to assist with stormwater control measure maintenance needs.

You can see these SCM specific emails for February by clicking on the links below. There is a subscribe option in the top left corner of the page if you would like to be added to our email lists.

For more detailed information about routine and non-routine maintenance of stormwater control measures (SCMs), download the Maintaining Stormwater Control Measures Manual.
