Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish has pledged $5 million over the next five years to plant thousands of trees across the region and increase Cuyahoga County’s tree canopy from 14 to 30 percent by 2040. This will be accomplished through the Healthy Urban Tree Canopy Grant Program that will be jointly coordinated by the Cuyahoga County Department of Sustainability, the Cuyahoga County Planning Commission, and the Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District. This is a competitive grant program that will encourage the strategies published in the Cuyahoga County Climate Change Action Plan to combat the deleterious effects of climate change and its impacts to residents.

The program goals are to:

  • Protect existing tree canopy
  • Expand tree canopy in areas that are vulnerable
  • Establish new tree canopy

The Cuyahoga County Planning Commission will accept applications for the Healthy Urban Tree Canopy Grant Program for the first round of funding in 2019. Interested applicants are encouraged to attend a free workshop to learn about the grant methodology, evaluation criteria and eligibility requirements.
